Disco Dancer is Back!


Bollywood stage production, Disco Dancer The Musical, is preparing for its entry on the Sadler’s Wells stage. Just weeks ahead of the production’s World Premiere, the show is gaining a lot of traction and attention due to the popular song “Jimmy Jimmy.” The song is being used by people in China on social media to make short format videos during the currently enforced Covid 19 lockdown. People are struggling for food and the song “Jimmy Jimmy” which, translated in Mandarin, means Give Me Rice, is being used as a protest and has gone viral.

Disco Dancer The Musical will world premiere at Sadler’s Wells from 16th – 20th November, running across seven shows. Introducing younger audiences while reconnecting older generations to the lead characters and lovers from the silver-screen blockbuster, ‘Jimmy’ and ‘Kim’ will be joined by an ensemble cast of supporting characters and a troupe of 16 dancers.

Saregama Live, the events division of India’s oldest music label, Saregama, and innovators of Indian music for a global audience, will bring the trailblazing, big-screen superhit to life onstage. Recreating the original soundtrack by the legendary King of Disco and Pop, the late Bappi Lahiri, Disco Dancer The Musical will provide an atmospheric, live theatre experience for audiences. The all-time hit film and its tale of love and vengeance will be transferred to the stage and recreated through elaborate dance, music, melodrama, emotion and comedy. The show is co-produced by Zero Gravity Entertainment.

The 1982, Bollywood super hit, Disco Dancer, became the biggest foreign hit film of the 80s, starring King of Dance, Mithun Chakraborty, and directed by B. Subhash. Its soundtrack was composed by legendary maestro, the late Bappi Lahiri. The musical pioneer was famed for redefining the disco and pop genres in popular Indian cinema. The film featured anthemic, dancefloor classics that have gained notoriety and fans across the globe, such as “I Am a Disco Dancer” and “Koi Yahan Nache Nache”. The seminal “Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja” has taken its own international journey over the years.The album went platinum in India at the time while becoming synonymous with the genre of Bollywood disco.


Written by Nicholas Bernard, Irfan Siddiqui, Ali Haji, Khush Mullick and Veer Panchal, Disco Dancer The Musical is adapted from the original script by Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza and Deepak Balraj Vij, The story chronicles the romance between Jimmy and Kim and Jimmy’s anguish as his mother dies in a wicked conspiracy. The grand-scale stage production features Arjun Tanwar, Hriday Gattani, Salonie Khanna, Tia Kar, Varun Tewari and Dipeesh Kashyap, joined by an ensemble of 16 dancers. Performances will be introduced by British Asian, stand-up comedian, Shazia Mirza. Leading talent and creatives in Indian film and theatre have come together to craft an immersive fantasy world onstage during a week of unmissable performances.
